Remember that investments go up and down in value, and you could lose money as well as make it. How you’re taxed will depend on your circumstances, and pension and tax rules can change. We don’t offer investment advice, so you’ll need to be confident you can manage your SIPP yourself.

SIPPs at a glance

A self-invested personal pension (SIPP) is the pension that puts you in control of your retirement and investments. You’ve complete flexibility to decide how much you save, and when and where your pot is invested. Like all pensions, your savings can grow tax-free, and could be topped up from UK Government tax relief.

A top-up from the taxmanIt only costs 80p of your own money to save £1, thanks to SIPP tax relief. And it’s even more efficient if you’re a higher earner. Read more on SIPP tax benefits.

Your pension, in your handsIn a SIPP, you manage your pension yourself - that includes deciding where it's invested and has the best opportunity to grow - and enjoy free access to your retirement savings when you come to access it from age 55 (rising to 57 from 2028) onwards.

Good to know about SIPPs

What are SIPPs?

SIPPs are ‘DIY’-style pensions that give you the freedom to invest your pot where you like, alongside all the usual pension perks like tax relief. You can also ask your employer to pay part of your salary directly into your SIPP (known as ‘salary sacrifice’). When you’re 55 or older (rising to 57 in 2028), a SIPP can give you more flexibility when you come to access your pot.

Learn more about what SIPPs are and how they work.

What’s the difference between a personal pension and a SIPP?

A personal pension is a pension you set up yourself (unlike a workplace pension or state pension). These are also known as defined contribution or ‘money purchase’ pensions, because the amount you receive in retirement depends on the amount you pay in.

A SIPP, simply, is a type of personal pension. It offers you wide investment choice and the freedom to manage your pot yourself. See our guide on pensions explained for more information.

When would I choose a SIPP?

You’re in control with a SIPP – meaning you need to be happy managing your pension yourself. Our investment ideas let you leave some of the legwork to us, but we don’t offer personal advice on which investments to pick. So, you’ll need to be confident about taking matters into your own hands.

As a SIPP is a pension, remember you won’t be able to make withdrawals until age 55 (rising to 57 in 2028). Before opening an account, please read our SIPP key features, risks and terms and conditions to make sure it’s right for you.
